A nice, quiet 1950s suburban neighborhood called Suburbicon is the setting for this dark, twisted movie from the Coen brothers. Directed by George Clooney, the movie starts with this all white neighborhood being infiltrated by (gasp) a black family. The white community is thrown into a tizzy and spends the whole movie trying to drive out this family, escalating to a violent end. A great story that only plays background and filler to a darker story-line.
Meanwhile, just a block away, a home invasion takes place at the Gardner home (Matt Damon and Julianne Moore). Damon’s wife is killed and he and his sister-in-law (also Julianne Moore) try to move on and raise his young son. Things start to take a dark twist and we find out Damon’s character isn’t the person we thought he was.
While the movie started a little slow, it kept my interest and had me wincing at some plot twists and laughing with surprise at others. It may not win at the box office, but it’s definitely worth seeing.
