The Americans season 5

One of the best shows on TV, that you probably aren’t watching, is The Americans on FX. It just wrapped it’s 5th season and is set to end it’s six season run in 2018. If you haven’t watched before, now is a great time to catch up, just in time for what promises to be a great final season.The-Americans-S4-17.jpg

This show is a twist on the classic spy genre. Created by Joe Weisberg, a former CIA agent, it features a married couple with 2 kids who are really Russian spies living as Americans. It takes place in the Virginia/DC area in the Cold War era 1980’s, oh and they live next door to an FBI agent. The twist is that you almost want them to succeed. Even though they are the enemy, you see a new side to the story you thought you knew.

The show has always been a slow burn as far as storyline development, but it does a great job of establishing the period through music and costuming, as well as commentary on historical events. Keri Russell (Felicity) and Matthew Rhys (Brothers & Sisters) have given phenomenal performances throughout the shows entire run. As well as Noah Emmerich (The Truman Show) as Stan their FBI agent neighbor. The standout performance of season 5 is Holly Taylor who plays their daughter Paige. She has had quite the story arc over the 5 seasons, as she is now grown up enough to know what her parents do for a living, and she is starting to be groomed for a possible future of doing the same thing. Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon) and Margo Martindale (Justified) also give great supporting roles as their KGB handlers.web_detailhero_series_dsktp_the-americans_1280x600_2

I highly recommend The Americans, it is a great show that will go down in history as one of the best ever! Season 5 was especially good for pushing the family storyline to a big decision point. It focused on the inner turmoil of the job these people are tasked with and the eventual toll it takes. Please binge it and let me know what you think.
