Forget Guardians of the Galaxy, Wonder Woman, and Justice League. Forget the fact that I read all of King’s Dark Tower series and there is finally a movie about them. Forget that little movie about War amongst the Stars coming in December. One of the best movies of 2017 has just come out on VOD everywhere, “Boone: The Bounty Hunter.” Starring John Hennigan, better know as John Morrison to my fellow wrestling fans or Johnny Mundo to my fellow “Lucha Underground” fans. Hennigan plays Boone, a bounty hunter with a popular television show that follows him around while he catches those who skipped out on court dates. Diving, flipping, running shirtless, one liners about “getting Booned,” and winks at the camera are what Boone does while he chases down these hardened criminals. Like Kevin Sorbo and Tommy Lister with their unpaid parking tickets. All which make for great television and a great movie premise. But as his ratings are dropping, Boone needs some real criminals to chase and help save the show. And that’s where our movie gets really interesting.
I’m not sure if I emphasized it enough earlier, but I seriously loved this movie. Hennigan is hilarious as Boone, with the perfect mix of TV star douchebag and actual good guy underneath. The stunts and fights he performs in this movie are AMAZING. I loved all the parkour running through cities and over rooftops, while his extensive time as a wrestling made Hennigan an excellent fighter to watch on screen. While watching “Boone” I was reminded of first seeing “The Rundown” with Dwayne Johnson. With his mix of humor and action, you definitely get a sense that Hennigan is just going to become a bigger star. But that doesn’t mean you can take anything away from the rest of the cast either. Boone’s Hunter/tv team is made up of Kat (Spencer Grammer), Denny (Osric Chau), and Jackson (Quinton “Rampage” Jackson). All three of which were hilarious and often put Boone in his place. I especially have to give it up to Spencer Grammer. She was great as his partner Kat and needs to be in more movies. She was great at not taking crap from Boone and being hilarious while doing it. Then add on top that she kicked major ass in her fight scenes. The movie was full of great cameos too. The aforementioned Kevin Sorbo did get playing himself getting chased by Boone. But you also had great roles played by Lorenzo Lamas, Corbin Bernsen, and Jonathan Lipnicki. I also have to say that I love seeing Richard Tyson back on screen as the film’s major bad guy. That man has given me chills as a villain ever since “Kindergarten Cop” and he still does in this movie.
“Boone: The Bounty Hunter” is available for purchase or rental on iTunes, Amazon, and wherever else you can get Video on Demand and I would highly recommend, it’s worth the price. Action, humor, and even a little heart, it’s one to check out.
