Yes, you’re in the right place…We are giving you a theatrical review.
Last week I had the pleasure of attending the musical Chicago at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. I have been a big fan of the movie version since 2002, but have never seen it live.
The real treat came by seeing Brandy Norwood return to the roll of Roxie Hart that she previously had on Broadway.Personally, I thought she killed it. She brought a unique humor to the roll and made it her own. She also really showed off her sultry, soulful vocals to the point where you wonder why she still isn’t a constant hit maker on the radio.
Another special part of the performance for me was seeing Roz Ryan return to the role of Mama Morton that she previously played for 18 years on Broadway. Brent Barrett was also great in the role of Billy Flynn, selling the “Razzle Dazzle” perfectly. We even saw an understudy in the part of Velma, but she was great and stayed right with Brandy vocally and had great harmony on their duet.
I won’t go too much more in depth on Chicago itself, but if you’ve never seen it please check it out if a touring production comes your way, you won’t be disappointed. At the very least check out the movie version as it is one of my favorite movie musicals of all time and won the Best Picture Oscar in 2002.
Check back with Take Too soon as we will be recording a special episode all about musicals featuring our friend from Hollywood Kacey Spivey.
