Staring: Roger Moore(James Bond), Richard Kiel(Jaws), Lois Chiles( Dr.Goodhead)
This was the Bond movie that graced my birth year in 1979. I think the original next installment (For Your Eyes Only) that was supposed to be the next Bond film should have never gotten scrapped for this mess. After doing a little research, apparently with the success of Star Wars in 1977, the people in charge of the Bond series thought that Bond fans would want a sci-fi thriller instead of a traditional James Bond film. I can understand their logic, but this was just done poorly from special effects, to the screenplay, and dialogue.
So the plot of the film is that Moonraker, is a space shuttle that was being shipped from California to the UK on the back of a 747 and the the shuttle got hijacked while en route to the United Kingdom. My first problem with this is, I’ve never seen a space shuttle launch from horizontal position to fly to the moon I know I’m not a rocket scientist, but I’ve seen a couple of space shuttles take off. Next thing is that the British never even had a space program, but I’m going to stop myself because I’m letting real life bleed over into movie world. Getting back on track, after the shuttle was hijacked,(M) is called by the Prime Minister and wants them to look into the hijacking of the Moonraker space shuttle and that’s how Bond gets involved.
Well, on a good note for fans of cheesy villains this movie that did very well with that. They brought back Jaws the only Bond villain to date to be in two movies, if I am not mistaken, and there’s also a random Samurai henchman who works for the main villain of the film. There’s also some cheesy humor that’s entertaining, and a pretty female scientist aka Dr. Goodhead.(I’m fairly certain I don’t have to explain this joke), who is James Bond’s love interest in this film. I can’t say that I would recommend this movie, it’s done very poorly in my opinion, but if you are a die-hard bond fan, see it just want to say that you saw it. My recommendation is keep the bar set pretty low and you won’t be disappointed.
Starring: Clint Eastwood, Patrick McGoohan, and Roberts Blossom
This movie is based on the true story of three inmates who attempt an escape from Alcatraz Island. This movie is very slow to get going ,and there is not a lot of excitement. The character dialogue is not that great, considering the feel the director was clearly going for. A lot of the film is male bonding and escape planning, and I get that, I just think it could of been done a lot better. There are a few suspenseful scenes that are done well, although very simply.
This movie did a good job of sticking to the facts of the story, so the ending is left up to the audience. I can’t say this is a great film, but it’s okay, I could recognize what they were going for throughout the film. So I would give it a 6 out of 10, like I said it was just okay.
