Ok, you read that right, I am recommending a show on CMT. Granted, I have never seen an episode, but I am intrigued by the subject matter alone.
Sun Records is based on the 2010 Tony nominated Broadway musical Million Dollar Quartet about Memphis in the 1950’s when Sam Phillips’ Sun Records was ushering in new talent such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. It is set in the era of the civil rights movement, and shows the birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll. That combination of country and R & B changed history forever.
The only real recognizable star is Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill, Agent Carter) as Sam Phillips. It is directed by Oscar winner Roland Joffe (The Mission, Killing Fields). I am hoping it is worth checking out for the music alone, I have wanted to see the stage adaptation for a few years and will now be glad to see a version from the comfort of my couch. Let me know your thoughts and if you plan on watching at taketoopodcast@gmail.com.
