Memorable Fake Presidents

The 2 permanent hosts and 4 guest hosts of the show have a continuing text thread where we discuss nerdy things and share news on a pretty much constant basis. We will not be sharing that text thread here today… However, those text threads tend to become brainstorming sessions and evolve into bits for the show or articles for the blog. Today we were discussing the upcoming Presidential Inauguration and it became a list of our favorite Presidents from TV and movies. I thought it would be interesting to share our take on this in hopes that you’ll find a new film to check out, or at the very least revisit an old favorite on Friday instead of watching the actual event.

Beau threw American President out there for Michael Douglas’ romantic comedy role. Dave was recommended by Brian, Kevin Kline gave a different twist on the president movie. Nick said Bill Pullman for his iconic speech in Independence Day. Craig prefers Harrison Ford saying “Get off my plane!” in Air Force One, or Terry Crews absurd President Camacho in Idiocracy. Roy is a fan of Kevin Spacey’s work in House of Cards.

I thought I would just fill in the blanks with a few others that were overlooked. James Earl Jones is considered important for portraying the first black president on film in 1972’s The Man. Morgan Freeman said ‘Life will go on. We will prevail.” in Deep Impact. Martin Sheen’s Jed Bartlet was the longest serving fictional president, on The West Wing. I found Jack Nicholson funny in Mars Attacks, although most people did not like that movie. Dr. Strangelove featured Peter Sellers saying “Gentleman, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!” Robert Redford’s The Candidate showed an interesting side of politics and campaigning. Mary McDonnell was great as the education secretary who became president in Battlestar Galactica. Many people found Dennis Haysbert iconic in 24. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is hilarious and has won a ton of awards as Selina Meyer on Veep. Even Billy Bob Thornton had a short, creepy turn in Love Actually as a pervy US president meeting with the british prime minister.

That’s our take, let us know if we overlooked anything and happy watching.
